Water leak at home: what to do step by step
A water leak can cause significant damage in a short time. First limit the water; then find the source and repair it. These are the steps.
What to do straight away
- Close the main water stopcock of the property.
- If the water is near sockets or the consumer unit, cut the power to that area.
- Mop up what you can and protect furniture and floors.
- Take photos or a video of the damage and the affected area before drying it.
- Contact your insurer and a plumber.
How to spot a hidden leak
- Close all taps and appliances and see whether the water meter keeps turning.
- Look for damp patches, peeling paint or mould on walls and ceilings.
- Watch for an unexplained increase in your water bill.
