Blocked pipes and drains: how to prevent them and when to call
A slow drain or a sink that will not empty usually warns of a blockage that is getting worse. Acting early and avoiding certain mistakes saves bigger problems.
Common causes
- Grease and food scraps in the kitchen sink.
- Hair and soap in showers and washbasins.
- Wipes, cotton buds and other items that do not belong in the toilet.
- Limescale or sediment building up over time.
What you can do yourself
- Use a plunger with the plug hole covered with water.
- Remove hair and visible debris from the grate and trap.
- Pour hot water (not boiling if the pipes are plastic).
What to avoid
Avoid harsh chemical products: they can damage the pipes, are hazardous to handle and must never be mixed. Do not push rods or wires in blindly either, as you can damage the installation.
How to prevent blockages
Fit drain strainers, do not pour grease or wipes down the sink or toilet, and clean the traps from time to time.
When to call a professional
- Several drains run slowly at the same time.
- There are bad smells or water backing up.
- The blockage returns within days.
- You have tried a plunger without success.
