My air conditioning is leaking water: causes and what to do
A leaking air conditioning unit indoors is one of the most common faults. It almost always has a fix, but it pays to act early to avoid damp on walls and floors.
Most common causes
- A blocked drain, from dirt or algae, so the condensation water cannot leave.
- Incorrect drain slope or a loose connection in the installation.
- Very dirty filters that restrict airflow and can cause ice on the coil, which then melts and drips.
- Low refrigerant, which can also cause ice.
What to do in the meantime
- Switch the unit off and avoid using it while it leaks.
- Put a container or a towel down to protect the floor and furniture.
- Clean the filters if they are dirty (with the unit off).
- Take a photo or short video of where it drips: it helps with diagnosis.
What not to do
Do not try to top up refrigerant yourself or tamper with the refrigerant circuit. Do not switch the unit back on if there is visible ice: wait for it to thaw and have it checked.
When to call a professional
- The dripping continues after cleaning the filters.
- There is ice on the indoor unit or the pipes.
- The water wets the wall, ceiling or gets near sockets.
- The unit also cools poorly or makes noises.
