Hot socket or burning smell: what to do straight away
A hot socket, a burning smell or sparks are warning signs: they can point to a loose connection, an overload or damaged wiring. Stay calm and follow these steps.
What to do straight away
- Cut the power to the affected circuit, or the whole home, from the consumer unit.
- If you can do so safely, unplug what was connected. Do not touch anything very hot or burnt.
- Do not use that socket or circuit until a professional has checked it.
- Ventilate the room if there is a smell.
- If there is thick smoke, flames or fire, leave the property and call 112.
Common causes
- Loose connections in the socket or junction box.
- Overload from plugging many or high-power appliances into the same socket or extension lead.
- Damaged, old or undersized cables.
- A faulty appliance plugged in.
How to prevent it
Avoid daisy-chained extension leads for high-power appliances, do not cover sockets with objects, and check the state of sockets and cables from time to time. If you notice discolouration or looseness in a socket, have it checked.
When to call a professional
- Whenever a socket gets hot, smells of burning or has sparked, even if it seems to have passed.
- If the problem repeats on several sockets.
- If the RCD or a breaker trips at the same time.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for a socket to feel warm?
It can be with high-consumption appliances, but if it is hot to the touch or there is a smell, it needs checking.
Can I replace the socket myself?
Only with the power off and if you have the knowledge. For a fault or a burnt socket, a professional is better.
How do I contact you?
By WhatsApp with a photo of the socket and what is happening, once the power is off.
