Consumer unit (fuse box): when to check or replace it
The consumer unit (fuse box, or 'cuadro eléctrico') is the heart of the installation: it distributes power and holds the protections. An old, overloaded or undersized unit can cause problems and fail to protect as it should.
Signs it is worth checking
- The property is old and the unit has never been replaced.
- Breakers trip often when several appliances run at once.
- There is no RCD, or it never trips when tested with its test button.
- You notice heat, smell or burn marks at the unit.
- You have added high-power appliances: air conditioning, induction hob, electric car charger.
What a professional does
They inspect the condition of the unit and its protections, check they are sized for what is connected, and propose what to repair, extend or replace. We also guide you on the documentation that applies to your installation.
Before a refurbishment
If you are refurbishing or extending, check the unit before starting to find out whether it can take the new load or needs adapting.
When to call a professional
- Any of the signs above apply.
- You are about to add high-power appliances.
- You are about to rent, sell or refurbish the property and want to know the state of the installation.
